Tesla towing and tow capacity

Can a Tesla tow a trailer or caravan? Yes — but there are things to know about capacity and range. Here's the overview.

Many people assume EVs can't tow — but a Tesla can. Several models can be fitted with a tow hitch and have an approved towing weight. It's important, though, to understand how it affects range, and that the exact capacity varies.

Which models can tow?

ModelTow hitch
Model YTypically available with a hitch and an approved towing weight.
Model XThe largest SUV; typically the highest tow capacity in the lineup.
Model 3Towing availability can vary by variant and market.
Model SAs a sedan, towing isn't usually a focus; check current options.

Range when towing

Towing a trailer increases consumption considerably — drag and weight pull range down, often noticeably. Expect more charging stops on longer trips, and use the car's route planner. The effect is largest at high speed and into a headwind, so a calmer pace helps range.

Trailer mode

Tesla has a trailer mode that adapts the car's systems when a hitch is attached (e.g. parking sensors). The car typically detects automatically when a trailer is connected. Always follow the car's and the hitch's guidance on maximum weight and fitting.

Is a Tesla a good tow vehicle?

For lighter trailers, a bike rack on the hitch and occasional transport, a Tesla is a fine choice — just plan the charging. For heavy caravans over long distances, pay extra attention to range and charging stops. To understand range in general, see range in winter and the model guides for Model Y and Model X.
