Tesla Model 3 vs Model Y

The two most popular Tesla models share a lot of technology but are built for different needs. Here are the differences — and help choosing.

Last verified: 15 June 2026

The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are built on a shared platform and have much of their technology in common — the same software, the same approach to charging and many of the same components. The difference is mainly in body, space and seating position. Do you want a sporty sedan or a roomy SUV?

Space and practicality

The Model Y is the clear choice if space matters most. The taller SUV shape gives easier entry, more rear headroom and a larger, more flexible boot — and comes in a 6-seat Model Y L. The Model 3 is still roomy for a family, but is a classic sedan with a lower entry.

Range and efficiency

Both models are efficient, but the lower, lighter Model 3 typically has a small consumption edge. At the same time, the Model Y comes in very long-range Long Range RWD variants. In practice, the difference in everyday range matters less than the variant choice — compare the specific Model 3 variants and Model Y variants.

Price

The Model 3 is normally the cheapest entry into a new Tesla, while the Model Y costs a little more for the extra space. Since prices change and depend on variant and market, check current prices on tesla.com.

Driving and comfort

The Model 3 feels sportier and more direct thanks to its lower centre of gravity and weight. The Model Y gives a slightly higher, more relaxed seating position that many prefer for family driving and longer trips.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose the Model 3 if you want the cheapest entry, a sporty sedan and maximum efficiency.
  • Choose the Model Y if you prioritise space, a higher seating position and flexibility — or need six seats.
