Tesla Sentry Mode & Dashcam

Two of the most valued Tesla features use the car's cameras for security: Sentry Mode watches while you're away, and Dashcam records while you drive. Here's how they work.

Sentry Mode

Sentry Mode is a "guard mode" that uses the car's cameras to watch the surroundings while it's parked. If it detects a possible event, it can start recording and alert you — typically with a message in the Tesla app. It adds peace of mind in public car parks. The mode uses some power while active, so at a very low state of charge it may switch off.

Dashcam

Dashcam uses the same cameras to record while you drive. You can save clips manually (e.g. at an incident) or let the feature save automatically. It's useful as documentation after an accident or near-miss.

Setup and storage

  • Storage: recordings are typically saved to a connected USB drive (or internal storage depending on the model). Use a drive with good speed and ample space.
  • Activation: turn Sentry and Dashcam on in the car's menus; you can often choose when Sentry is active (e.g. not at home).
  • Clips: save and view recordings via the car's screen; newer software may also show them in the app depending on model/market.

Note

Features, storage requirements and app viewing can vary by model and software version. Check the car's current menus and Tesla's guidance for the applicable details.

Privacy and rules

Recording in public spaces is subject to privacy and data-protection rules. Familiarise yourself with the applicable Danish/EU rules on how dashcam recordings may be used and shared — especially if you share clips publicly. Use the features responsibly.
