Autopilot vs FSD

Tesla talks about both Autopilot and Full Self-Driving — but what's the difference, and what should you expect in Europe? Here's a sober explanation.

Important about responsibility

Whatever the name, these systems are driver assistance, not self-driving. In Europe, FSD too is classified as Level 2 (Supervised): you have full responsibility, must keep your hands ready and supervise the driving at all times. Features, availability and price change — always check the current status on tesla.com.

Autopilot — the basics

Autopilot is Tesla's basic driver assistance and is primarily intended for highways. It typically includes adaptive cruise control (maintaining distance to the car ahead) and steering assist that keeps the car in its lane. Autopilot is designed for highway driving and doesn't react to traffic lights and road signs the way the more advanced features do.

FSD (Full Self-Driving) — the extended

FSD builds on Autopilot and adds more advanced features — including assistance on city streets, where the system can respond to road signs and traffic lights, make turns and change lanes. It uses more of the car's cameras and computing power. But again: in Europe FSD is classified as Level 2 (Supervised), so the driver must still supervise and is responsible.

Status in Europe

FSD (Supervised) is being rolled out gradually in Europe: approvals happen country by country via national authorities, and a broader EU decision is expected later. That means what's active — and when — can vary from market to market and change over time. So treat any timeline as uncertain, and confirm the current status, features and price on tesla.com before buying FSD.

Should you pay for FSD?

It depends on how much you'll use the features and what's actually active in your country. Many people do fine with Autopilot for highways. If in doubt, wait and see the current FSD status in your market before adding it. Look up the terms in the Tesla glossary, and if you're brand new, start with the beginner guide.
