Tesla key — card, phone and fob

A Tesla doesn't come with a classic car key. Instead you use your phone, a key card or a key fob. Here's how the three work.

One of the first things new owners notice is that a Tesla doesn't come with an ordinary car key. Instead there are typically three ways to unlock and drive — and it's smart to know all of them so you can always get into the car.

The three keys

KeyHow it works
Phone as keyThe car recognises your phone via the app and unlocks automatically as you approach. The most-used method.
Key cardA credit-card-sized card you tap on the pillar to unlock and on the centre console to drive. Works without power — a perfect backup.
Key fobA small fob (an option on some models) that works more like a traditional key.

Recommended setup

  • Phone as key for daily use — easy and hands-free.
  • Key card as backup, e.g. in your wallet — it works even if the phone is dead.
  • A spare key card somewhere safe at home.

Sharing with family

You can add several phones as keys, so e.g. a partner can use the car with their own profile and settings. This is managed in the app. Remove access again if a phone is lost or replaced.

Good to know

Always keep the key card within reach — it's your reliable backup. If you lose access, Tesla can help via your account. If you're brand new, start with the beginner guide.
